{"id":43,"date":"2013-09-19T05:54:03","date_gmt":"2013-09-19T05:54:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/?p=43"},"modified":"2022-03-22T05:48:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-22T05:48:31","slug":"color-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/?p=43","title":{"rendered":"Color Scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>One thing I love about making a movie is being able to craft \u00a0the way the world looks. \u00a0It&#8217;s not easy to build a big, expensive set on an indie budget &#8211; I found this out while making SOUL KILLER. \u00a0It&#8217;s better to start with an already great looking location and spruce it up. \u00a0We managed to do that with our shoot in Blarney Castle &#8211; a genuine castle in the middle of California (more on that another time).<\/p>\n<p>But another way to craft the look of the movie is through color. \u00a0For SOUL KILLER, the primary colors are an icy blue &#8211; to symbolize the otherworldly feel of astral projection, and a light purple &#8211; that symbolizes Natalie (Kelly Chambers) more or less. \u00a0If you watch the movie, you&#8217;ll see those colors crop up a few times in interesting ways.<\/p>\n<p>Horror movies are a great genre to really push style. \u00a0FRIDAY THE 13th has its blood red. \u00a0HALLOWEEN has its pumpkin orange. \u00a0So, SOUL KILLER has the icy blue.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Soul-Killer.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-45\" src=\"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Soul-Killer-300x66.jpg\" alt=\"Soul Killer\" width=\"895\" height=\"197\" srcset=\"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Soul-Killer-300x66.jpg 300w, http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Soul-Killer-588x130.jpg 588w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 895px) 100vw, 895px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another creative decision made when filming SOUL KILLER was to film it in a naturalistic style. \u00a0My favorite time period for movies is the late 70&#8217;s and early 80&#8217;s. \u00a0You had the gritty realism of the 1970&#8217;s mixed with the emerging dawn of the modern day special effects blockbuster. \u00a0 \u00a0So, all the flesh tones are accurate in SOUL KILLER &#8211; we didn&#8217;t push them into orange territory (which happens today on a surprising number of big movies).<\/p>\n<p>Films are stories that tell an audience how people should treat each other (either consciously by the filmmaker or not). \u00a0Put another way, as a filmmaker you have a right and responsibility to tell an audience what you feel are the meat and potatoes of this world. \u00a0Like any good chef &#8211; you want your &#8220;meal&#8221; to look good &#8211; and coming up with a good color scheme for your movie at the beginning of the process can help do just that!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One thing I love about making a movie is being able to craft \u00a0the way the world looks. \u00a0It&#8217;s not easy to build a big, expensive set on an indie budget &#8211; I found this out while making SOUL KILLER. \u00a0It&#8217;s better to start with an already great looking location and spruce it up. \u00a0We [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":[],"categories":[1],"tags":[],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43"}],"collection":[{"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcomments&post=43"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":226,"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=\/wp\/v2\/posts\/43\/revisions\/226"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fmedia&parent=43"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Fcategories&post=43"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"http:\/\/soulkiller.com\/blog\/index.php?rest_route=%2Fwp%2Fv2%2Ftags&post=43"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
